WHAT IS CONGENITAL CURVATURE?
Also known as chordee, congenital curvature has a genetic origin. Yes, some young men are already born with a penile curvature but they will only notice the deformity in puberty, due to more frequent erections and penile development. This condition presents itself because one of the sides of the penis is bigger or has more elasticity than the other, leading to a bent penis when erect. The curvature can appear sideways, upwards or downwards or in some cases a combination of two of them.
An estimated 3% of the male population suffers from congenital penile curvature; however that number has increased in the last few years due to more awareness of the problem.

SURGICAL CASES OF CONGENITAL CURVATURE
Men don’t usually seek treatment when the curvature angle is below 30 degrees, for sex is not quite affected. However, patients with more severe cases of congenital curvature report the following:
- Difficulty and pain in penetration
- Penile curvature makes sex impossible
- Penis slips out easily
- Sex is restricted to a few positions and short movements
- Partner’s pain and discomfort
- High sensibility on the glans, which could lead to premature ejaculation
- Abnormal appearance of penis is disturbing, causing fear or shame.
- Less frequently we see cases of psycho-erectile dysfunction, connected to stress and loss of self-confidence.
THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY DIAGNOSIS
If the curvature is not severe and won’t stop you from having a normal sex life, with good quality, you can easily live with it. However, it’s important to consult your urologist for a professional opinion and to take necessary precautions so it doesn’t get any worse. The curvature makes the penis vulnerable to trauma during sexual intercourse and in that case it will become more severe.
The advantage of an early diagnosis is preparing the young man for a corrective procedure in the future and to give him some orientation so the curvature doesn’t evolve into something more serious (like Peyronie’s disease). Late discovery can bring traumatic consequences to the patient, compromising his sexual, psychological and social development. Dr. Paulo Egydio in an international reference in the urogenital area, specialized in correcting several types of penile deformities such as curvatures, narrowing and size loss, as well as implants of all types of penile prosthesis.
